Vol. 8 (2022)

Despite the cancellation of the 2022 West Coast Symposium, the two essays from participating institutions in this 2022 issue of Western Tributaries demonstrate that interdisciplinary programs remain robust.

In Volume 8, each of the essays illustrates how the authors navigate both interior and exterior spaces. In “Rome Fusion City,” You Jia Zhu uses the twelfth-century guidebook Mirabilia Urbis Romae and the fourteenth-century map of Rome by Fra Paolino da Venezia to take the reader on an exploration of place and memory. In his essay, “Autonomy, Economy, Colony…” Thor Madsen explores ways in which societal disruptions and increasingly pervasive technological advances affect an individual’s sense of “self,” and also suggests counter-narrative actions of collective resistance.

We hope the essays within Volume 8 challenge readers to think in new ways about the navigation of exterior and interior spaces and places. Enjoy.
