Greek Without Greeks: Competing Notions of Authenticity in the Pronunciation of Classical Languages

Abstract

In this paper, competing notions of what constitutes "correct" or "proper" pronunciation of classical languages is considered. The idea of authenticity and ownership of a language is discussed, and the possibility of pluricentrist phonology is investigated.

Steven James Peterson, St. John's College, Santa Fe

Steven James Peterson is an alumnus of St. John’s College of Santa Fe, NM. His passion for language and culture led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree in Eastern Classics from St. John’s. He is currently recording the works of Shakespeare in their reconstructed historical pronunciation.
